Research Associate - Heriot-Watt

Applications are invited for a Research Associate position to work on the EPSRC-funded project “Built Infrastructure for Older People in Conditions of Climate Change (BIOPICCC)”, which is a part of a major research network on Adaption and Resilience to a Changing Climate. The project develops strategies to ensure that the infrastructures and systems supporting the health and social care for older people will be sufficiently resilient to withstand harmful impacts of climate change in the future, up to 2050. The multidisciplinary research is conducted in collaboration with researchers from Durham University
, who provide expertise in climate modelling, social and geographical science and health and health care research

The Research Associate, to be based in the School of the Built Environment, Heriot-Watt University, will be involved in research on modelling effects of natural hazards (e.g., floods, wind storms) on essential infrastructure systems (transport, water supply and sewers, energy, buildings, telecommunications) taking into account their interdependence. The objective of this work is to develop a methodology and its software implementation for modelling of interdependent behaviour and failures of infrastructure systems subject to natural hazards, including effects of the failures on health and social care systems supporting older people.

Applicants should have a PhD (or equivalent) in engineering (e.g., civil, electrical), computer science, geomatics or another field and research experience in modelling of complex systems. Expertise in quantified network analysis and basic knowledge of GIS are desirable. Previous experience in research related to infrastructure adaptation to climate change will be an advantage. Good interpersonal skills are required to collaborate with the other researchers and stakeholders in and outside the project.

The appointment will be for two years starting on 1 September 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Closing Date: 30th July 2010
