Go-Geo Help – Metadata Creation Tool
Introduction
To make submission of metadata as simple as possible, we have made the
metadata creation tool. This is designed to guide the user through the
process of metadata creation, with plenty of support along the way.

Logging
in via UK Federation
In order to access the Metadata Creation Tool, you will need a UK
federation username (see Image below). If you are a member of a FE
institution
then you should already be familiar with UK Federation. UK Universities
use
the UK Federation in different ways, so please contact your UK
Federation access or Computing
Services team if you are confused by this step.

Metadata Creation Tool -
Main Menu
Once
logged in, the main menu should be visible (See Image below). It
contains 3 sections; creating, edit/exporting and publishing.
These processes are described below.
These
buttons will take you to the metadata entry pages
These buttons will allow you to edit or export any
previously
saved records.
This
button will allow you to publish your record on Go-Geo! either as a Private,
a Group or as and Open Share record
Back to
Top At the bottom of the
page, two buttons give you the option to save a partial record
or to save a completed record(see Image above).
Once the ‘Save’ button has been clicked,
your metadata record is saved on your My-Go-Geo! profile and can be
accessed at any time by logging in to the Metadata Creation Tool and
selecting the "Edit Records" button.
Creating
a New Record
Clicking
on either the ‘Create New UK Record’ or 'Create New International
Record' button (see above) will take you to the
metadata entry pages (see Image below). This
page is split into 6 categories, in the same way as the Metadata Records
are displayed from search. Some of the details are mandatory and some
are optional. The mandatory details are shaded red and there have a red
exlimation mark next to them. A summary of the number of mandatory
fields that remain empty is given at the top of the form
(see Image below).

In
some cases, more than one box is required per
attribute in order to add all the relevant details. Each attribute will
have one text box as standard, but boxes can be added and taken away
using the + and X buttons next to the box (see detail Image below).![]()

Hovering the mouse
pointer over a text box will reveal a tip on what information needs to
be entered. This includes a definition of the term, data type and any
appropriate comments.
My
Go-Geo! Integration
My Go-Geo! is a service for
registered users of the Go-Geo website allowing a certain amount of
customisation and access to extra services.
You can activate your My-Go-Geo! session by choosing the "Login" button on the top navigation bar of the Go-Geo! Home Page (see Image below) - or it will start automatically when you come into the "Metadata Creator Tool" via Athens/Shibbolith authenticated login.
The main benefit of this service in terms of metadata record creation is that all your personal details from your My Go-Geo! profile will be automatically added to your new metadata records. This saves time and makes the whole process a bit easier. Please look at the My-Go-Geo! help page for more information on accessing your profile.
